51 jailed in Egypt over island protest
According to judicial officials and lawyers, a court in Egypt has sentenced 51 people to two years in jail each following protests against the handing over of two Red Sea islands by the Egyptian government to Saudi Arabia.
Following the verdict, parents and friends of the defendants burst into tears and cried out in shock after learning of the verdict outside the Cairo courthouse.
However, two defence lawyers Hossam al-Khadrawy and Ahmed Abdel-Latif confirmed that the verdict can be appealed.
While the judge delivered th verdict, thirty-three defendants were present in the court, while the rest had been released on bail.
During the April 25 protests, police quickly dispersed angry protesters and arrested dozens of people with prosecutors charged them with participation in illegal rallies.
