70 left dead after fuel tanker crash in Afghanistan
A head-on collision involving an oil tanker in eastern Afghanistan has left at least 70 people dead with children said to be among the victims.
The explosion which occurred close to Taliban checkpoints also left a dozen others injured as the oil tanker burst into uncontrollable flames following the the collision.
Reports say many of the dead, including children, were burnt beyond recognition as a result of in Sunday’s accident in Ghazni province, near the Afghan capital Kabul.
Jawid Salangi, a spokesman for the governor of Ghazni, said the two buses, carrying about 125 passengers from Kabul to Kandahar, collided with the tanker, setting off a fire that quickly engulfed all three vehicles.
Salangi said Afghan army units were rushed to the scene of the accident in Moqor district and managed to save some passengers, many of which are now in critical condition.
