90 days after CDS failed to capture bandit Turji, COAS boasts of bringing down Lakurawa terror group

Newly appointed Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede, has promised to end the menace of the Lakurawa terror sect that has been terrorising Sokoto and Kebbi States in the North-West region of the country.

Oluyede who made the boast after a meeting with President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Monday, said the days of the new terrorists group
are numbered as they will soon be eradicated.

His boast is coming about 90 days after his boss, the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) Gen. Chris Musa had made a similar promise to Nigerians, which has not been fulfilled.

While speaking with State House correspondents, Oluyede said he is confident that the Nigerian military has what it takes to neutralize the terror group especially with Nigeria’s collaborative efforts with neighboring countries to tackle cross-border insurgency in full swing.

“I am here to reassure Mr. President that I will do my best to make Nigeria better in terms of security,” he said.

“I’m going to explore doing this maybe in a different way and achieve results that will significantly improve our security situation.”

Speaking specifically on the Lukarawa section, the COAS said:

“We are hitting them hard at the Nigerian end, and once you hit them hard here, they tend to flee to Niger Republic. Now that Niger Republic is coming on board, that means very soon, Lukarawa will be a thing of the past,” he said.

“We need to collaborate with neighbouring countries because these issues affect them too. By working together, we can address the threat more effectively”, he added.

This vow of eliminating the Lakurawa sect by the COAS is reminiscent of a similar one made in February by Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), Gen. Chris Musa, who had promised that notorious bandit leader, Bello Turji would be taken out in no time.

Musa had, during a press conference in Abuja on February 10th, promised to make sure Turji was captured but months down the line, the bandit leader is still roaming free, causing more havoc for his victims.
