Abia cracks down on kidnappers, demolishes hideout, warns landlords

The Abia State Government has taken decisive action against criminal activity by demolishing a building in Osisioma Local Government Area, which was being used as a kidnappers’ hideout.

The government has also issued a stern warning to landlords, urging them to conduct thorough background checks on prospective tenants.

Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, addressed journalists in Umuahia on Wednesday, expressing concern that many landlords prioritize rent collection over the safety and security of their communities. He emphasized the necessity for landlords to exercise due diligence before leasing their properties, maintaining proper records of their tenants, and ensuring their properties are not used for criminal purposes.

“The state government will not hesitate to demolish any house used for kidnapping,” Kanu warned, urging residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to security agencies.

This crackdown follows a recent police operation that resulted in the neutralization of six suspected kidnappers, the rescue of four victims, and the recovery of weapons, including two AK-47 rifles, six magazines, and 32 rounds of live ammunition.

Governor Alex Otti reiterated his administration’s zero-tolerance policy towards criminal hideouts, ordering the complete demolition of the Osokwa house and pledging to prosecute its owner. “Any landlord who allows criminals to use their property is as guilty as the criminals themselves,” Otti declared.

He directed the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs to collaborate with the traditional ruler of the area to ensure communities remain alert to suspicious individuals.
