Activist Dele Farotimi secures bail amidst defamation case; court restricts media engagements
Prominent lawyer and human rights advocate Dele Farotimi has been granted bail by an Ado-Ekiti Magistrates’ Court in the sum of ₦30 million, following allegations of defamation brought against him by renowned legal luminary and Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Afe Babalola.
During Friday’s hearing, Magistrate Abayomi Adeosun ruled that Farotimi’s bail application met the necessary conditions. The court mandated two responsible sureties, the submission of Farotimi’s international passport, and prohibited him from engaging with the media for the duration of the trial.
The case stems from allegations outlined in a petition filed by Afe Babalola, who accused Farotimi of criminal defamation in connection with statements made in his recently published book. The book, which has stirred significant public discourse, reportedly includes claims that Babalola contends are damaging to his reputation.
The charges have sparked widespread debate, with some viewing the case as a test of the balance between free speech and defamation laws in Nigeria. Farotimi, a vocal advocate for social justice and government accountability, is no stranger to controversy. His works and public commentary have often drawn both praise and criticism for their boldness.

The court’s restriction on media interviews has added another layer of complexity to the unfolding legal drama. Analysts suggest the directive may be aimed at curbing potential influence on public opinion and ensuring a fair trial.
Farotimi’s supporters have rallied behind him, claiming the charges are an attempt to silence dissenting voices. However, Babalola’s legal team maintains that the petition seeks to protect their client’s hard-earned reputation and uphold the principles of accountability.
The case has set the stage for a closely watched legal battle, with implications for free speech, the rights of activists, and the limits of defamation law in Nigeria.
