Army chief urges support in fight against Lakurawa terrorist group

The Acting Chief of Army Staff, Lt-Gen. Olufemi Oluyede, on Sunday, urged the people of Sokoto State to support the ongoing efforts to secure the country against the foreign armed group, Lakurawa.

He made the call during his tour to Sokoto to assess the operational readiness of the troops.

The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) confirmed last week that the group has been making incursions into Kebbi and Sokoto, two of the states in Nigeria’s North-West.

Oluyede said: “I am here to see my troops, assess their operational readiness and charge them to continue doing what they are doing to secure this country.”

The COAS’s first stop was the Tangaza local government area, a perceived hotspot for Lakurawa activities.

There, he met with community leaders, including the council Chairman, Alhaji Isa Salihu Kalenjeni and solicited their cooperation.

He added: “We need your support. If you don’t support us, we will not succeed and if we don’t succeed Nigeria will not be secured.”

The army chief acknowledged that challenges would arise but stressed the importance of collective effort in overcoming them.

“There will always be challenges but what is important is how we handle them. I assure you the Nigerian Army will not relent in their effort to secure our country,” he assured.

Oluyede also stopped at Masallaci, a community in Tangaza LGA and just 25 kilometres from the Niger Republic.

He was briefed by theatre commanders, including the General Officer Commanding, the 8 Division and Garrison Commander.

A similar briefing and appeal for support followed at the Illela border community.
