Human rights lawyer and Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) Femi Falana, has vehemently denied allegations of seeking financial gain for securing presidential pardons, emphasizing his commitment to justice without financial motivation.

In an interview with Sahara TV on Monday, Falana stated, “As a policy, we do not collect fees to write letters for pardon. It is not part of our system because we do not profit from the tragedy of people.”

Falana cited instances from his 42-year career, including securing the release of six wrongly detained Nigerians in Kirikiri Correctional Centre. “I did a letter addressed to the then Minister of Interior…on the day he received the letter, he ordered the authorities to release them.”

He specifically addressed allegations of seeking N10 million to secure a pardon for Bobrisky, calling them “infantile and ridiculous.” Falana expressed disappointment, saying the claims caused concern within his family, but reassured them of his integrity.

“I told my family that, at the end of the day, I will not disappoint you,” he said.

Falana’s defense comes after a voice note shared on social media alleging him of arranging a private apartment for crossdresser Bobrisky’s six-month sentence. Falana denied involvement and issued a 24-hour ultimatum for the accuser to retract the statement.

Falana reiterated, that “In the last 42 years of my legal practice, I have never ever demanded a kobo to write a letter of pardon for anybody.”
