Borno Police warns residents against participation in nationwide protest

The Borno State Police Command has issued a warning to residents against participating in the planned nationwide protest, citing the state of emergency on insecurity still in force in the state.

In a press statement signed by Assistant Superintendent of Police Nahum Daso on Thursday, the command stated that the ban on protests or mass actions remains in effect.

The police claimed to be aware of “disgruntled unpatriotic individuals” mobilizing youths for a mass protest tagged #EndbadgovernmentinNigeria2024 through social media and other publications. While acknowledging the fundamental human rights to peaceful procession, the police expressed concerns that protests are often hijacked by individuals with ulterior motives.

The statement emphasized that the command is working with other security agencies to prevent any acts of lawlessness. Residents are advised to refrain from participating in the protest, as the state of emergency and ban on public processions remain in place.

It reads, “”The police, as a civil and responsive institution, is not unaware of the fundamental human rights to peaceful procession by any group, but experience has shown that protests are often hijacked by mischievous and disgruntled individuals with ulterior motives.

“The general public should note that Borno State is still under a state of emergency, and therefore, the ban on any form of public procession in the state still subsists.

“The command is in active collaboration with other security agencies to nip in the bud any act of lawlessness.”
