CAN tackles Tinubu over appointments to North-West Development Commission
The North West chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has expressed reservations over President Bola Tinubu’s recent appointments to the board of the North-West Development Commission (NWDC).
In a statement issued on Sunday, the CAN Chairman in the zone, Elder Sunday Oibe, said the appointments favoured Muslims, disregarding the region’s diverse Christian population.
The statement read: “We are deeply concerned about the recent appointments… Unfortunately, these appointments do not reflect the diversity of the region, as no Christians from the seven states were selected.”
He emphasized that the North-West comprises both Christians and Muslims, as well as various tribes, including Hausa and Fulani, and that all interests must be represented.

The CAN chairman drew parallels between these appointments and the All Progressives Congress’ Muslim-Muslim ticket during the 2023 presidential election.
“We are convinced beyond reasonable doubt that the composition of the board… demonstrates that the intention behind the Muslim-Muslim ticket is starting to manifest,” Obe added.
He stressed that indigenous Christians reside in all seven states of the North-West.
“It should not be assumed that all the people are Muslims.” He urged President Tinubu to reassess the appointments, ensuring balanced representation and inclusivity, ” he concluded.
President Tinubu had in September signed the North West Development Commission Bill into law to revitalize the region.
