Chinese President Xi Jinping issued a rallying call to BRICS leaders on Thursday, urging them to become a “stabilising force” in the face of “serious challenges” threatening global peace and development.

Speaking on the final day of the BRICS summit in Kazan, Russia, Xi emphasized the significance of the group’s unity, saying, “The common march of the global South towards modernity is a major event in world history.”

Xi’s address highlighted the need for collective action to address pressing issues. “We must be a stabilising force for peace, strengthen global security governance, and explore solutions to hotspot issues that address both the symptoms and the root causes,” he stated.

The Chinese President also sounded a warning note, cautioning that “the world still faces serious challenges to its peaceful development.”

In a specific call to action, Xi pressed for a ceasefire in Gaza and measures to prevent further conflict in Lebanon.

“We need to continue to push for a ceasefire in Gaza, relaunch the two-state solution, and stop the spread of war in Lebanon,” he said, emphasizing the humanitarian imperative: “There should be no more suffering and destruction in Palestine and Lebanon.”

Xi’s remarks come as Moscow seeks to forge a united front of nations against the West through the BRICS forum.

The summit has sparked hopes of strengthened cooperation among emerging economies, with potential benefits for global governance and development.
