CJN urges judges to uphold moral standards

Published

The Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, at the weekend challenged judges in the country to uphold moral standards in the discharge of their duties.

The CJN, who made the call at a public discourse organised to celebrate Justice Habeeb Abiru’s elevation to the Supreme Court in Lagos, lamented a few bad bags are tarnishing the reputation of those in the bench in the country.

She, however, admitted there are honest and knowledgeable judges in Nigeria.

She said: “Each person is accountable to his or herself and to God.”

Kekere-Ekun emphasized the importance of aligning laws with fundamental principles, clarity, stability, and judicial independence. She also stressed considering the ordinary citizen’s perspective.

“The foundations of justice are influenced by Abrahamic faiths, preaching morality, uprightness, and righteousness,” the CJN noted.
