Court stops VIO from impounding vehicles, issuing fines

Justice Evelyn Maha of the Federal High Court, Abuja, on Thursday restrained the Directorate of Road Traffic Services, from stopping, impounding or confiscating vehicles on the road.

The judge, who issued the order while ruling on a fundamental rights enforcement suit filed by a human rights activist, Abubakar Marshal, also barred the agency popularly known as the Vehicle Inspection Office (VIO) from imposing fines on motorists.

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Director of Road Transport, the Area Commander in Jabi, and the team leader in the area were listed as respondents in the suit.

The judge held that no law empowers the respondents to stop, impound, confiscate, or impose fines on motorists.

She also granted a perpetual injunction restraining the respondents from further violating the rights of Nigerians to freedom of movement.
