Delta govt directs nursing college to withdraw query to student over Remi Tinubu’s video

The Delta State government has directed the State College of Nursing Sciences to withdraw a query issued to a student of the institution, Osato Edobor, over a video she posted on various social media platforms after a visit of Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, to the school.

The First Lady was in the school as part of the Renewed Hope Initiative Health Programme, where 10,000 professional kits were distributed to midwives in the South-South geopolitical zone.

In the video which drew the ire of the college leading to the query, Edobor had captured moments where students rejected allegedly humiliated the First Lady when the master of ceremony referred to her as their mother during the event.

In the video which went viral shortly after it was posted on social media, the MC had introduced Mrs. Tinubu as “everyone’s mother,” but the students who responded in unison, sang “Na your mama be this,” which means (She is your mother), refusing to accept that the First Lady is their mother.

In the query which was signed by the institution’s Provost,Evbodaghe Rita Ogonne, and dated March 27, 2025, Edobor was accused of engaging in a “malicious act” by recording herself singing and posting an “unofficial response” to a song during the First Lady’s arrival at the Dome Event Centre in Asaba.

The school management further directed Edobor to submit a written explanation in triplicate copies within 24 hours, justifying why disciplinary action should not be taken against her. accused the student of disrespecting Governor Sheriff Oborevwori.

However, following public outrage over the query, the state government on Friday, ordered the school to immediately withdraw the query issued to the student as it is in no way interested in victimizing any student over the incident.

In a video posted on X, the state Commissioner for Health, Dr. Joseph Onojaeme, directed the college to withdraw the query forthwith.

Onojaeme also assured the public that there was calm and that no student was being victimised.

“On the trending letter that was query issued to the student of the school of nursing, Agbor, I have instructed the provost to withdraw the letter. We don’t want to victimise any of the students,” the Commissioner said.

“I’ve also reached out to the student in question and the student has confirmed to me that the letter was withdrawn yesterday, last night.

“So I want the public to be aware of this and there’s calm everywhere. We are not victimising any of the students,” he added.

In a follow up post on its handle, the State Government stated that the rights of every student in health sciences and related health programs are upheld.

“The Honourable Commissioner for Health, Dr. Joseph Onojaeme, has directed the immediate withdrawal of the query issued to Nursing Student Osato Edobor by the Provost of the School of Nursing Sciences, Agbor.

“This decision by the Commissioner for Health stems from a commitment to ensuring that the rights of every student in health sciences and related health programmes are upheld, this way, fostering a conducive learning environment for their academic excellence.”
