DHQ confirms Lakurawa terrorists use social media, money to recruit Nigerian youths

The Defence Headquarters has confirmed that the Lakurawa Islamist terror group, has been making use of the social media as well as financial incentives and other welfare packages to recruit Nigerian youths into their fold.

The Director of Defence Media Operations, Maj. Gen. Edward Buba, who made the confirmation while briefing journalists on military operations in Abuja on Tuesday, said the Army is aware of the recruitment activities of the Jihadist group using the social media and welfare packages.

Earlier reports had also indicated that the group has been dolling out cash incentives running into millions of naira to young men in different communities in Sokoto and Kebbi States so they can be indoctrinated into the sect.

While addressing the press conference, Buba said the military was working closely with other security agencies and the state government to halt the recruitment efforts.

“The group is employing social media platforms, showcasing sermons and enticing recruits with welfare packages,” the military spokesman said.

“Nevertheless, we know of these plans and are working together with other security forces and the state government to thwart the efforts of the terrorists,” he added.
