Edo Assembly suspends 18 local councils’ chairmen for gross misconduct

The Edo State House of Assembly has suspended the chairmen of the 18 local government areas in the state for alleged insubordination and gross misconduct.

The chairmen were suspended alongside their deputies for two months.

The House also directed the leaders of the legislative arms in the local councils to take over leadership of the respective councils at Tuesday’s plenary in Benin City.

The suspension followed a petition written by Governor Monday Okpebholo to the House over the refusal of the chairmen to submit their financial records as directed.

Okpebholo on December 3 gave the chairmen 48 hours to submit their statements of account from September 2023 to date to the Edo State Assets Verification Committee.

In the letter, the governor described their action as an act of insubordination and gross misconduct and requested the House to look into the matter.

The local council officials were suspended after the House adopted a motion moved by the lawmaker representing Esan North East l, Mr. Isibor Adeh, and seconded by his counterpart from Akoko-Edo ll, Donald Okogbe.

After the debate, the Speaker of the House, Mr. Blessing Agbebaku, called for voting on the matter

14 members supported the motion for their suspension, six opposed it while three members abstained from the exercise.
