El-Rufai’s son apologizes over tweet supporting killings in Southern Kaduna after backlash

Son of former Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai, Bashir, has tendered a public apology after a post he made on X (formerly Twitter) where he seemed to support killings in Southern parts of the state by bandits triggered widespread condemnation and backlash.

In the controversial tweet which many condemned as being inciting and capable of causing ethnic violence and a killing spree, Bashir had said that the killings in Southern Kaduna would persist if residents of the zone continued to attack Fulani herdsmen.

“Southern Kaduna residents will keep seeing sheghe (trouble or suffering) if they continue to attack indigenous Fulani herdsmen,” Bashir had written in tweet which he later deleted following criticism by many X users including his own mother who posted that she is only responsible for what she posts on the platform after some commenters tried to drag her into the conversation.

But following public outrage, Bashir, on Thursday, offered an apology, admitting that his post was in bad taste and written in “heat of the moment.”

“My tweet about Southern Kaduna residents & persecuted Fulani herdsmen was in bad taste & also badly written in an attempt to make a point in the heat of the moment.

“I apologize for that; to those that know me, and are aware that I don’t harbor such sentiments,” he wrote.
