Former Chairman of the defunct National Electoral Commission (NEC), Professor Humphrey Nwosu, has reportedly passed away.

NEC is now known as the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

According to a source who confirmed his death to Vanguard Newspaper, Nwosu died in a hospital in Virginia, United States. An official statement regarding his death is expected to be released soon.

He was born on October 2, 1941. He was appointed NEC Chairman by then Military President, General Ibrahim Babangida, serving from 1989 to 1993.

He conducted Nigeria’s historic June 12, 1993 election which was widely adjudged as the freest and fairest in the country’s history.

The election which saw Chief Moshood Abiola as the presumed winner was later annulled by the then Babangida regime.

Chief Abiola, of the defunct Social Democratic Party (SDP) defeated Bashir Tofa of the defunct National Republican Convention (NRC).

In July 2024, the House of Representatives called on President Bola Tinubu to immortalise Nwosu.

The lawmakers wanted him immortalised for conducting the election adjudged as the freest and most credible in post-independence Nigeria.
