Father arrested for chaining, starving 5-year-old son in Bauchi

Operatives of the Bauchi State Police Command have rescued a five-year-old boy who was found chained and starved for three days by his father in the Gwallagan Mayaka area.

The arrest followed a tip-off from concerned neighbors.

According to the Bauchi State Police Command spokesperson, SP Ahmed Mohammed Wakil, in a statement on Thursday, the child, Hussaini Abubakar, endured severe mistreatment at the hands of his father, Abubakar Nuhu, 50. The suspect allegedly confined his son to prevent him from stealing from neighbors, claiming he was advised to do so by a friend.

“On 3rd July 2024 at about 1705hrs information was received from the ward head of Gwallagan Mayaka area of Bauchi that he received information from a good Samaritan, a resident of his ward that his wife Amina (not real name) informed him that she saw a 5yrs old boy of their neighbours tied with a chain inside a room situated at the same address (Gwallagan Mayaka) and she immediately check-up the boy to confirm and found the boy lying tied with the chain unconscious,” Wakil stated in a press release.

The rescue operation was led by CSP Mubarak Baba, who responded to the neighbor’s alert and found Hussaini Abubakar chained and unconscious. The child disclosed to authorities that he had been deprived of food for three days.

Upon investigation, CP Auwal Musa Muhammad psc directed the immediate arrest of Abubakar Nuhu for child abuse. The Commissioner emphasized the seriousness of such offenses and urged the public to report any suspicious behavior to law enforcement.

The case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for further inquiry into the motives behind the abuse. The police also thanked the public for their vigilance and support in combating such crimes.

CP MM Auwal psc cautioned, “The General Public to desist from such acts and report any suspicious person or group attempting to commit or on the commission of such an act to the nearest Police Station or call our emergency toll numbers; 08151849417, 09053872273.”
