Special Report: Intrigues that secured soft landing for Saraki, Ekweremadu

The much awaited trial of Senate President Bukola Saraki, his Deputy Ike Ekweremadu and former spokesperson of the PDP Presidential campaign, Femi Fani-Kayode was stalled on Tuesday as the Federal Government failed to arraign them in court.

The case involving Saraki and Ekweremadu, which is before an Abuja High court and borders on a two-count charge of allegdegd conspiracy and forgery of the Senate Standing Rules during the senate leadership election in 2015, was stalled as court officials acknowledged both men have not been properly served their court summons.

However, Justice Yusuf Haliru of an Abuja High Court has said that their arraignment will now hold on Monday June 27, as he has ordered that their court summons be pasted on the notice board of the National Assembly and also be sent to them through other means.

The case of Fani-Kayode was stalled as the judge handling his case did not attend the hearing, even as EFCC officials brought him to the court but met the judge’s absence.

The absence of the judge today makes it the second time he had failed to appear in court, having done so last Friday, the day he was meant to have been arraigned, which mandated his arraignment for today June 21st.

The travails of Saraki are seen by many as a fall out of in-fighting within the leadership of All Progressives Congress (APC), arising from the former’s refusal to kow-tow to party lines in the installation of National Assembly leadership.
