Grid Collapse: Peter Obi urges comprehensive reforms to address Nigeria’s power woes
The recent collapse of Nigeria’s national grid has sparked outrage, with Peter Obi, a prominent political figure, on Tuesday, condemning the government’s inability to provide a reliable power supply.
Obi described the recurring disaster as a “national shame” and a “glaring testament to the failure of leadership and policy implementation.”
“How long must Nigerians endure a system that fails to provide one of the critical necessities for a productive society?” Obi asked via a press statement, emphasizing the critical role of power supply in transforming the economy.
He highlighted the significance of power supply to Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs), which are the “engine of job creation and a major contributor to our GDP.”

Obi contrasted Nigeria’s power generation with that of other African economies, noting that South Africa, Egypt, and Algeria generate and distribute significantly more electricity despite having smaller populations.
Nigeria, with a larger population, generates less than 10,000 megawatts, with frequent collapses and crises.
“This disparity in power generation is a reflection of the deep-rooted governance deficit that continues to hold back our growth and potential,” Obi stated, calling for “urgent, comprehensive reform.” He emphasized that Nigerians deserve a government that prioritizes measurable indices of development, concluding that “a new Nigeria is possible.”
Obi’s statement comes amid growing frustration over the country’s power infrastructure. The collapse of the national grid has left many without electricity, underscoring the need for immediate action to address the issue.
