Gunmen kill two policemen in Anambra

Gunmen on Thursday killed two policemen in Uruagu, Nnewi North local government area of Anambra State.

The spokesman for the state police command, Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the incident in a statement in Awka.

He said the operatives came under attack during a routine patrol in the early hours of the day.

The spokesman added that the command had launched a manhunt for the attackers.

Ikenga said: “The Joint Security Force has launched a manhunt for the armed men responsible for the murder of two police operatives during an investigation operation early this morning, October 3, 2024, at Uruagu, Nnewi North.

“Preliminary reports indicate that the attackers opened fire on sighting the police team and threw an improvised explosive device into their operational vehicle. Unfortunately, two of the officers lost their lives in the line of duty, and the vehicle was engulfed in flames.”

Anambra and other states in the South-East have recorded several attacks on police operatives and facilities since February 2021 with hundreds killed and properties worth several billions of Naira destroyed by the criminals during the period.
