DIPLOMATIC ROW: Erdogan, Saudi leaders in talks to end row between Gulf states and Qatar
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has officially tendered an apology saying he is sorry over the downing of a Russian jet last November in an incident which occurred near Turkey-Syria border.
Erdogan says he is ready to restore ties with Russia by pledging to repair diplomatic relations with Kremlin as there was no deliberate intention in carrying out the attack.
The country had taken a hard stance in the wake of the incident, straining diplomatic relationship between both countries.
Moments after the apology was tendered, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov informed that Russian President Vladimir Putin received a message from Erdogan expressing his “sympathy and deep condolences” to the family of the killed pilot, and “asked to be forgiven”.
Continuing, Peskov said Erdogan also reportedly promised that he would do “everything possible” to restore relations with Russia.
