IGP orders probe of stampedes at Abuja, Anambra food distribution grounds
The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has ordered an investigation into the stampedes at humanitarian grounds in Abuja and Anambra State.
At least 17 persons died, while others sustained injuries following a stampede during the distribution of rice by officials of the Obijackson Foundation in Okija, Ihiala local government area of Anambra State on Saturday.
Similarly, 10 persons died and eight others were injured during the distribution of food items to vulnerable and aged people at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Maitama, Abuja.
The Force Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi, who addressed journalists at a media briefing in Abuja, said the IGP has directed all police commissioners in the affected states to probe the incidents.

The IGP, according to Adejobi, asked government officials, groups, individuals, community leaders, and non-governmental bodies to work towards establishing a comprehensive and organized framework for distributing palliatives.
The spokesman said: “The IGP has hereby warned groups and organizers of similar events to ensure the involvement of security agencies as negligence on their part is criminal and would not be overlooked, as provided for in Sec. 196 of the Penal Code and Sec. 344 of the Criminal Code, Laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”
