The Imo State Police Command has dismantled a notorious kidnapping and armed robbery syndicate operating in Orogwe, Owerri West Local Government Area.

The operation resulted in the neutralization of three suspects and the arrest of two others, identified as 20-year-old David Ifeanyichukwu and 24-year-old Abuchi Joseph.

The Command’s Public Relations Officer, ASP Henry Okoye, confirmed the development in a statement issued on Tuesday. He revealed that the police, acting on intelligence and following extensive investigations, engaged the gang in a fierce gun battle on December 19, 2024.

“The gang had been linked to the abduction of Osuji Chimereze and three others on November 12, 2024, during which they stole a Mercedes Benz and other valuables,” Okoye stated.

During the operation, law enforcement officers recovered six AK-47 rifles with serial numbers 11330, 12102, 3836, 8260, and 9940, as well as 113 rounds of ammunition, a locally made gun, and two stolen vehicles—a Mercedes Benz ML 350 (registration number RRT 469 FF) and a Hijet shuttle bus (JRV 42 XA).

“These vehicles were used by the gang in multiple criminal activities, including previous kidnappings,” Okoye added.

Tragically, two officers sustained injuries during the firefight and later succumbed to their wounds.

“The Imo State Police Command mourns the loss of these brave officers and commends their dedication to duty,” Okoye said.

Efforts are ongoing to track down other members of the syndicate who managed to escape during the operation.

Okoye assured residents that the police, under the leadership of Commissioner of Police Aboki Danjuma, are intensifying patrols and working with other security agencies to ensure a peaceful festive season. He urged the public to report suspicious activities to the nearest police station or contact the command via 0803 477 3600.

In a separate development, the Imo State Police Command on Tuesday provided palliatives to the families of 30 deceased officers in honor of their sacrifice and in the spirit of the Yuletide season.

The donation included essential items such as bags of rice, a live cow, and monetary gifts. Representing the Commissioner of Police, Deputy Commissioner Sirajo Fana assured the families that their welfare remains a priority for the command.

Speaking on behalf of the beneficiaries, Mrs. Gift Ubi expressed deep gratitude for the gesture. “This support is not just material relief; it provides emotional comfort during this festive season,” she said.
