Jigawa to conduct local council election October 5
The Jigawa State government has fixed October 5 for the local government election in the state.
The Chairman of the Jigawa State Independent Electoral Commission (JISIEC), Alhaji Awwal Muhammad, stated this at a stakeholders’ meeting on Friday in Dutse.
Muhammad assured the commission’s readiness to conduct a credible election in the 27 local government areas of the state.
He recalled that the commission had earlier announced the postponement of the council election from June to June 2025 following the amendment of the state electoral law.

The chairman said: “However, I believe that you are aware of the recent Supreme Court judgement directing all state governments to put in place democratically elected leaders at the local government level in their respective states with immediate effect.
“In compliance with the judgement, the JISIEC, being lawful authority deemed it necessary to revert to its earlier decision on local government election, and unanimously requested for re-amendment of the state electoral law to conform with the Supreme Court judgement and consequently fixed Saturday, October 5, 2024, as new date for the conduct of local government election in Jigawa State.”
He, therefore, urged security agencies, traditional and religious leaders, political parties, organisations, women groups, youth leaders, media and community groups to support the commission in its desire to conduct credible election in the state.
