The Kano State Public Complaint and Anti-Corruption Commission has uncovered a warehouse where palliative rice donated by the federal government for distribution to vulnerable people in the state are allegedly rebagged and sold to the public.

According to the Commission’s Chairman, Barrister Muhuyi Magaji, operatives of the agency discovered the warehouse located in Hotoro Western Bye-pass following a tip-off by concerned citizens.

Magaji who addressed a press conference on Tuesday in Kano, revealed that about 28 trucks of rice palliatives, provided by the federal government were suspected to have been diverted to repackage and sell them in the open market.

“We have uncovered a serious case of mismanagement and diversion of public goods. These palliatives were meant for the poor and vulnerable, but unfortunately, some individuals are trying to profit from the suffering of the people,” Magaji said.

He added that one suspect has been arrested in connection with the case, while investigations are ongoing to identify and prosecute all those involved.

“This is shameful and heartless. People are struggling, and yet some individuals are stealing from the poor. We commend the anti-graft agency for taking swift action.

“The Commission will leave no stone unturned in ensuring that those responsible for this act of corruption are brought to justice. We are also working to recover the palliatives and ensure their proper distribution to the intended beneficiaries,” Magaji assured.

He further urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities involving government relief materials while reiterating the agency’s commitment to fighting corruption in all forms, promising transparency and accountability in the handling of the case.
