BURKINA FASO: Terrorists ambush, gun down 6 paramilitary police officers

The Kebbi State Police Command has confirmed the killing of 11 people and the abduction of an unspecified number after terrorists suspected to be Lakurawa militants invaded six villages in the Arewa Local Government Area of the state.

The State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Nafiu Abubakar, who confirmed the attacks in a statement on Tuesday, disclosed that the simultaneous attacks which occurred on Sunday, also left two residents critically injured.

He said the assaults was reportedly carried out in retaliation for the recent killing of one of the leaders of the sect known as Maigemu, by security forces.

“They targeted six villages, killing 11 people and leaving two others in critical condition. We are on their trail, and God willing, we will apprehend them soon,”Abubakar said.

Also confirming the attacks to journalists, the Chairman of Arewa LGA, Alhaji Sani Aliyu, stated that the victims had been laid to rest according to Islamic rites.

He further confirmed that the attack was a reprisal for the recent security operation that resulted in the killing of Maigemu, a notorious bandit leader, as part of ongoing efforts to combat terrorism in the region.

“The attackers stormed Birnin Dede and nearby communities, setting homes ablaze and forcing residents to flee. Only one village was spared, as military personnel were stationed there.

“Security forces have intensified operations to apprehend the perpetrators and restore stability in the affected communities,” Aliyu said.
