At last, Buhari signs 2016 budget

The imbroglio occasioned by the 2016 budget has finally come to an end, as President Muhammadu Buhari, Friday afternoon, signed the appropriation document into law.

With the signing of the budget document, the implementation is expected to commence in earnest.

It would be recalled that the budget had suffered serious delay since it was laid before the joint session of the National Assembly on December 22, 2015.

The process of passing the budget by the federal legislatures witnessed several controversies, including allegations of padding, reported missing of the budget and or withdrawal.

However, when the budget was transmitted to the President for assent, President Buhari withheld his signature, signalling another round of controversies, with the Presidency alleging “padding” of the budget against the wishes of President Buhari.

The last of controversies threatened to put the executive and the legislature on war path, with lawmakers threatening to override the President’s assent. However both arms of government buried the hatchet after a meeting President Buhari and Vice President Yemi Osinbajo held with the leadership of the National Assembly.
