Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, on Monday revealed how he revoked Julius Berger’s certificate of occupancy for plots in Abuja’s Katampe District.

Speaking at the flag off ceremony for and Construction of 40 Judges’ Quarters flag-off ceremony on Monday, Wike explained that the land’s allocation to Julius Berger, a German construction giant, remained undeveloped for 15-20 years.

“When I saw the ‘Julius Berger’ post, I inquired about the land’s ownership and allocation timeline,” Wike said. “The director of lands confirmed Julius Berger’s ownership, allocated 15-20 years prior, with no development. I invited Julius Berger’s MD for dinner, without discussing the land. The next day, he received the revocation letter, citing public interest.”

Wike justified the revocation, stating, “Government-allocated land must be utilized, not left idle for decades.” He emphasized post-retirement housing shields judges from manipulation and interference.

The 40 Judges’ Quarters project, approved by the Federal Executive Council, has 70% of funds released. Allocation includes 20 units for FCT High Court, 10 for Federal High Court and 10 for Court of Appeal.

Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, hailed the planned construction of 40 Judges’ Quarters as a significant milestone enhancing judicial officers’ welfare in the Federal Capital Territory.

“Beyond the courtroom, a supportive living environment is vital for judges to focus on their heavy responsibilities,” Justice Kekere-Ekun said.

“Judicial officers require peace of mind, security and comfort to dedicate themselves to interpreting and applying the law effectively.

“The construction of these residences is a practical step towards ensuring that judicial officers are well-supported; it reflects the recognition that the mental well-being of judicial officers is directly tied to their living conditions.

“These homes will provide a secure and tranquil environment enabling judicial officers to perform their duties with greater focus, efficiency and clarity of mind.

“The ability of judicial officers to perform their functions is strengthened when their well-being is prioritised and their work condition is conducive,” she said.

The ceremony was attended by dignitaries, including Court of Appeal President, Justice Monica Dongban-Mensem.
