NELFUND explains why students in South-East institutions have not received loans

The Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) on Friday responded to criticism surrounding the disbursement of its funds, stating that geopolitical zones do not influence the allocation of its loans.

This comes after the release of N2.94 billion to 19 universities, benefiting 27,667 students, with no institutions from the South-East and South-South regions among the recipients.

The omission sparked outrage on social media, with users expressing disappointment and alleging regional bias. However, NELFUND has clarified that the disbursement process is based on verification responses from eligible institutions, not geopolitical zones.

In a statement, NELFUND explained that it sent verification lists to all eligible institutions, and payments are being made to those that have responded. The agency urged institutions in the South-East, which have not yet responded, to complete the verification process to enable their students to benefit from the scheme.

>The statement posted on X reads, “It’s important to clarify that geopolitical zones are not a factor in the disbursement process. NELFUND sent a verification list to every institution eligible for disbursement. Payments are being made to institutions that have responded to this verification.

“Unfortunately, we have not yet received any response from the institutions in the South-East. We urge these institutions to complete the verification process so that their students can benefit from the scheme.”

This clarification aims to address concerns of regional discrimination and provide transparency into the disbursement process.
