Newcastle United secured a 2-0 victory over Arsenal in a Carabao Cup semifinal clash at the Emirates Stadium on Tuesday night.

Newcastle have never won the competition but will make their second final in three seasons if they avoid defeat, or only lose by a one-goal margin, in the second leg.

Arsenal, second in the Premier League, had begun the tie as favourites, but now have it all to do in the return fixture on February 5.

Alexander Isak scored his 14th goal in 15 games in the 37th minute of the game to set Newcastle on the way to their seventh successive win.

Anthony Gordon doubled the visitors’ lead in the 51st minute, converting the rebound after goalkeeper David Raya could only parry Isak’s shot.

Tottenham Hotspur will take on Liverpool in the other semifinal tie on Wednesday. While the final of the competition will hold at Wembley on 16 March.
