Nigeria plunged into darkness again, as national power grid collapses for 8th time in 2024

Nigerians will have to undergo yet another day of widespread power outages as the national electricity grid suffered its latest collapse on Tuesday.

This marks the eighth grid failure in 2024, highlighting the nation’s ongoing struggle with an unreliable electricity supply. The grid’s collapse occurred at approximately 6:18 pm on Monday evening, with power generation dropping drastically from 3.87 gigawatts at 5 pm to zero by 7 pm.

As of 2:35 pm on Tuesday, hourly generation readings from the National Grid showed that none of the Power Generation Companies had a single megawatt. However, the grid’s operators reassured Nigerians that restoration efforts were underway, with a promise of “Restoration soon.”

This latest grid failure comes after multiple collapses in October, prompting the Federal Government to promise a permanent solution to the embarrassment. The repeated power failures have sparked frustration nationwide, with citizens and businesses feeling the pinch of the unstable power infrastructure.
