The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has issued a formal demand for Amnesty International to retract and apologise for its report titled “Bloody August: Nigeria Government’s Violent Crackdown on End Bad Governance Protests.”

In a letter dated January 6, signed by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the NPF described the publication as misleading and damaging.

Amnesty International’s report detailed alleged human rights violations, excessive violence, and police brutality during the August 2024 #EndBadGovernance protests. However, the NPF has categorically denied these allegations, dismissing them as baseless and lacking credible evidence.

“We have thoroughly reviewed the claims and can confidently assert that they are completely false,” the NPF stated, adding that officers acted with professionalism and minimal force while safeguarding peaceful protesters and addressing criminal activities.

The NPF also provided media reports and other evidence to counter Amnesty International’s claims, insisting that its operations adhered to global best practices.

The Force expressed concern over the negative impact of the report on public trust and officer morale.

“Such falsehoods demoralise our officers who risk their lives daily to protect the public,” the statement read.

The NPF demanded that Amnesty International issue a retraction and public apology within seven days, warning that failure to comply could lead to legal action to protect the reputation and integrity of the Force.

Reaffirming its commitment to professionalism and respect for human rights, the NPF stated: “We will continue to serve with diligence, professionalism, and respect for human rights.”

The police emphasized the need for accurate and unbiased reporting, warning against narratives that could undermine law enforcement efforts or erode public confidence in security institutions.
