The Federal Government has approved N30 billion for Nigeria’s 30 universities of agriculture to launch mechanized farming, marking a significant push to revitalize agricultural education and practice in the country.

The announcement was made by the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, on Tuesday in Abuja while speaking at a retreat organized for pro-chancellors of federal universities.

Dr. Alausa explained that each of the 30 specialized universities would receive N1 billion as a take-off grant to implement mechanized farming. He further directed that the universities must return to their core mandates and discontinue programs unrelated to their founding purposes.

“Universities of agriculture must strictly focus on their core mandates, Dr. Alausa said. “The government is committed to seeing these institutions own and operate mechanized farming systems, which will serve as models for innovation, research, and practical application in agriculture.”

The minister underscored the critical role of these specialized universities in promoting food security, advancing agricultural technology, and producing skilled graduates who can transform the sector.

The N30 billion approval is part of the government’s broader strategy to diversify the economy and strengthen agriculture as a key pillar for national growth.
