NNPP cracks down on lawmakers over alleged anti-party activities

The New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) in Kano has taken decisive action against four lawmakers, including Senator Kawu Sumaila, over allegations of anti-party activities.

The other suspended lawmakers are Kabiru Alhassan Rurum, Ali Madakin Gini, and Sani Abdullahi Rogo.

Hashimu Dungurawa, NNPP Chairman in Kano, announced the suspension on Monday, stating that the lawmakers were elected on the party’s platform but have recently acted against its interests, norms, and values.

“We are seeing them as non-functional members of our party. They are doing things contrary to our interests and values, which has made it necessary for us to suspend them due to their wrongdoings and demoralizing actions,” Dungurawa said.

One of the incidents that led to the suspension was Senator Kawu Sumaila’s failure to invite NNPP members to a recent project commissioning event, while top APC leaders, including National Chairman Abdullahi Ganduje and Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin, were in attendance. This move was seen as a blatant disregard for the party’s protocols and a clear indication of Sumaila’s allegiance to the APC.

The suspension comes amid rumors of a potential mass defection of NNPP members to the APC. Ganduje hinted at plans to welcome senior NNPP officials, senators, and legislators into the APC during an event in Kano over the weekend. This development has raised concerns within the NNPP, with many members feeling betrayed by the actions of their colleagues.

Despite the suspension, Dungurawa emphasized that the NNPP remains open to reconciliation. If the suspended members acknowledge their actions and seek forgiveness, the party may consider reinstating them. However, Dungurawa made it clear that the party will not tolerate any further acts of disloyalty.

The NNPP’s decision to suspend the lawmakers has been seen as a bold move to assert the party’s authority and maintain discipline within its ranks. As the political landscape in Kano continues to evolve, the NNPP’s actions will likely have significant implications for the state’s political future.
