The police have reportedly arrested some protesters who converged on the Lekki tollgate in Lagos State to mark the fourth anniversary of the #EndSars protest on Sunday.

The protesters had gathered at the tollgate in commemoration of the massacre of youths by soldiers on October 20, 2020, during the protest against police brutality while calling for the disbandment of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS).

According to reports, while the youths assembled to peacefully mark the anniversary of the protests, policemen on ground tried to disperse them with teargas and gunshots and in the process, about 22 of them were arrested including the national spokesman of Youth Rights Campaign (YRC), Hassan Taiwo Soweto and some members of #EndBadGovernance Movement.

Reports say those arrested were bundled into a black maria and driven away to the Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department at Panti in Lagos.

Human rights activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, who confirmed the arrest in a post on his X handle, called for their immediate release and criticised the government’s continued suppression of peaceful protests.

“The most senseless police force in the world. Why attack peaceful protesters? Did the Nigeria Police Force think they can use brute force to save Buhari, Tinubu and @jidesanwoolu for their role in the Lekki Toll Gate massacre? NEVER!!! #RevolutionNow”, he wrote.
