Putin asserts Russia’s right to use nuclear weapons if provoked
Russian President Vladimir Putin has said that Russia retains the right to employ nuclear weapons in response to aggression.
He emphasized that such scenarios could arise “if the enemy, using conventional weapons, poses a critical threat” to Russia’s sovereignty during a Security Council meeting focused on nuclear deterrence.
At the meeting, Putin advocated for revising Russia’s foundational policies on nuclear deterrence to align with current geopolitical realities. He specified that any aggression against Russia by a non-nuclear state, especially if supported by a nuclear power, would be viewed as a coordinated attack.

Putin further indicated that Russia would contemplate the use of nuclear weapons if it received credible intelligence regarding a significant launch of aerospace attack systems. This includes threats from strategic and tactical aircraft, cruise missiles, drones, hypersonic, and other aerial vehicles crossing Russia’s borders.
He asserted that all updates to the existing deterrence policy are meticulously calibrated and proportionate to the contemporary military threats facing the nation.
Additionally, Putin highlighted that Russia has adopted a “highly responsible” stance regarding the use of its nuclear capabilities.
