Reps propose tax exemption for military personnel
The House of Representatives Committee on Finance has proposed exempting military personnel from personal income tax, in a move aimed at recognizing the sacrifices of personnel of Nigeria’s armed forces,
The committee’s chairman, Hon. Abiodun Faleke, made the announcement on Thursday during a clause-by-clause review of four tax bills transmitted to the National Assembly by President Bola Tinubu in October 2024.
Explaining the rationale behind the proposal, Faleke emphasized the critical and demanding nature of military service, arguing that tax relief would serve as a form of financial support and recognition for the armed forces.
“Mr. Speaker, honourable colleagues, the committee proposes that the personal income of military personnel should be exempted from tax. This is because of the critical nature of their assignment,” Faleke stated.
The proposal received unanimous endorsement from the committee, signaling strong legislative backing for the initiative.
If adopted, the tax exemption could provide financial relief for thousands of military personnel across the country, many of whom serve under strenuous and high-risk conditions. While the proposal is still in its early stages, it reflects a broader conversation about improving welfare packages for Nigeria’s security forces, particularly as they continue to combat insurgency, banditry, and other security threats nationwide.
