Residents alerted as heavy rainfall, dam releases threaten Lagos with severe flooding

The Lagos State Government has raised concerns about a renewed threat of flash flooding following Thursday’s intense rainfall, described as the heaviest in months.

Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources Tokunbo Wahab, in a statement on Sunday, warned that Oyan Dam water releases have overwhelmed river channels, causing drainage disruptions.

“The past few weeks have seen drastic water level increases at our four gauge stations, exacerbated by Ogun-Osun River Basin Development Authority’s water releases from Oyan Dam,” Wahab said.

Key areas of concern include Kara, with water levels reaching 2.2 meters, and Isheri-North GRA, exceeding flood thresholds at 20.015 meters.

Flash Flood Advisory

The government’s latest advisory cites unusually high rainfall averages and maximum values for Thursday. Wahab emphasized, “October’s readings surpass previous months, with consistently heightened water levels.” Residents in low-lying areas and Ogun River banks are urged to prioritize safety by relocating upland to prevent loss of life and property.

Recent Flooding Incidents

July’s 10-hour downpour in Lagos and Ogun states grounded businesses, toppled a two-story building in Mushin, and stranded thousands. Pupils were unable to attend school due to flooding. The government reported nine hours of rainfall, while some areas experienced 12 hours of continuous rain.

Affected Areas

– Kara: Water levels at 2.2 meters, nearing threshold
– Isheri-North GRA: Water levels exceeding flood thresholds at 20.015 meters
– Majidun: Peak water level recorded on October 14 at 1.466 meters
– Falomo: Flooding expected along corridors due to rainfall and OORBDA water releases

The Lagos State Government cautions residents to remain vigilant, anticipating further rainfall this month.
