SocialMediaTrends: Nigerians react as assaulted Bolt driver apologises to Hon. Ikwechegh
Social media users have been unanimous in condemning an Abuja-based Bolt driver, Stephen Abuwatseya, who was assaulted by the House of Representatives member representing ABA South/North, Hon. Alex Ikwechegh, a few weeks ago.
The case which was brought to public knowledge by social activist, Martin Vincent Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan or VDM, had caused a lot of public outrage which led to human rights lawyer, Deji Adeyanju, dragging the lawmaker to court.
The House of Reps also weighed in on the matter and summoned their member to answer questions on the attack on the driver. The then sober Ikwechegh had tendered a public apology to the driver and Nigerians, saying he was embarrassed by his actions and regretted them.
But while Nigerians awaited the outcome of the lawsuit filed against Ikwechegh and the action from the House, they were shocked when VDM shared a video on Friday where Abuwatseya was seen apologizing to the Ikwechegh in the lawmaker’s residence.
In the video, VDM revealed that the Bolt driver had betrayed him and Adeyanju and made them look stupid and regret ever coming out to fight for him.
He explained that he and the lawyer had negotiated a compensation of N5m and a new car for Abuwatseya to withdraw the case from the court as well as start a new life.
But to his surprise, Abuwatseya did not carry them along neither did he tell them that Ikwechegh’s men had paid him the N5m in three tranches and also bought him the car till he confronted the honourable’s people who confirmed that Abuwatseya had been settled.
Then came the surprise and irksome apology which got everyone berating the driver for betraying not only VDM and Adeyanju, but all Nigerians who stood up for him.
This is how VDM described the Bolt driver’s action in the video:
“Can you imagine this? The bolt
driver that was a$$vlT3d by the house of reps member Hon ALEX MASCOT IKWECHEGH has come out to apologize to his oppr3$$0r, maybe i should just tell everyone what we went through for this mumu to get justice, since he has chose to r!d:cl3 his generation.”
The revelation drew a lot of flaks from social media users who all poured their anger on the driver, with many calling him an ingrate while others blame poverty for his actions.
Some of the reactions below:
“The guy is really who the MASCOT guy said he was… VDM you have indeed done your own part. He’s a disgrace to himself & his family. Such level of ungratefulness is appalling to say the least.” – @kayodeol

“I can’t put into words how angry I am seeing that bolt driver apologize to Alex Ikwechegh; He said “little misunderstanding”. After being assaulted, mocked, & threatened? He even brought the Lord’s Prayer into it, trying to quote n@nsense. People like this makes it very difficult for other victims to speak out, but even more difficult for the public to take ’em seriously. The likes of Ikwechegh shouldn’t hold any public office, someone who’s power-drunk with no remorse or regards. That bolt driver is a complete example of a disgrace.” – @DanielRegha
“My take home on this:
1. Hon Alex is a tyrant. He doesn’t deserve any public office. He apologised to Nigerians, exempted the Bolt driver in the fake (copy and paste) apology, but ensured the driver apologised to him instead. What a flip!!
2. Beyond poverty, the Bolt driver is an ingrate. He has proven that it’s difficult to fight for a poor man.
VDM narrated how he and Deju Adeyanju tried to ensure justice is served.
Finally, both parties arrived at N5million and a new Toyota Corolla, as compensation. The driver got paid, got the car, but never got back to VDM and Deji Adeyanju. They were rather informed that the victim and his brother were having a nice time in the Hon. house.” – @olubunmi.awolusi
“What did you expect from a hungry man who has been induced and forced to come out and apologize? What exactly is he apologizing for? For what u did not do? So ridiculous.” – @Unwanaassam1
“Never trust the word of a poor man, he’s only moved by his survival instinct…..poverty renders you a slave of your very self. After the effort of verydarkman and many Nigerians, it’s so shameful of him.” – @gideonagge01
“He will make Nigerians not to be interested in stuff like that if it ever happens next time, it shows how greedy and gullible, also foolish some people can be,instead of letting Nigerians fight for him till the very end, rather he chose to act like a coward and a child, I pity him.” – @aprokonurse
“The bolt guy is a capital FOOL….
that man has promised him a position in the government office nd probably give him more money…….
Person when the man wan lure to he side and silently kill….. Foolish bolt driver.” – @Tweet_Stealer1
“This man was oppressed by a honourable and Nigerians fought and supported him to get justice, only for him to turn around and start bootlicking and apologizing to same oppressor.
Truly the black man is always loyal to his oppressors.” – @Westinomarley1
“Honestly, I don’t have anything against what Deji Adeyanju did Verydarkman & other People stuck their necks out for this bolt driver guy & he went to go & apologize to the same man that assaulted him? He literally Made a fool out of people supporting him to get justice.” – @Alexsambryte
“If this what POVERTY means, I’ll never be POOR. This is totally disgusting and disgraceful. Fighting for some Nigerians at times do not worth it.” – @gclassikhome
“Apology or no apology, this man does not deserve to be a leader. That should be the mindset of everyone. I don’t think we need people like him if we want this nation to be great.” – @obafunmibi
“Bolt Driver was assaulted, he called for help.Nigerians rose and there’s national outrage. Police started probe of Alex Ikwechegh. House of Reps started their own probe. 1 week after both probes started, Bolt Driver is in Alex’s office apologizing. This is Nigeria.” – @afrisagacity
