Sultan tells Nigerians to intensify prayers for leaders, avoid criticism

The Sultan of Sokoto, Sa’ad Abubakar, has called on Nigerians to increase their prayers for elected officials and refrain from criticizing those in power.

Speaking at a regional conference on climate change-induced conflicts in Kaduna, Abubakar emphasized the importance of prayer in addressing the country’s challenges.

“Do your best in worshipping Allah (God) and leave the rest to Him, not to anybody. Don’t follow those who will lead you astray,” Abubakar urged, cautioning against blindly following false prophets. He also reminded Nigerians that “nothing is permanent,” and encouraged them to keep praying for their leaders and the nation.

Abubakar warned religious leaders against deceiving their followers for personal benefits, stating, “90 percent of people who listen to religious leaders in mosques and churches believe in them because they view them as saviours. Only God can save any human being.”

He emphasized the importance of unity among northerners, saying, “If we stand together, we can confront any obstacle. United, we can build a more prosperous and stronger community.”

The sultan’s message comes at a time when Nigeria is facing numerous challenges, including poverty, insecurity, and climate change. He highlighted the north’s specific struggles, saying, “The North faces many issues and obstacles—not just limited knowledge of climate change but also poverty and insecurity in the north, once known for peace and progress.”

As the spiritual leader of millions of Nigerian Muslims, Abubakar’s words carry significant weight. He has been a vocal advocate for peace and unity, previously condemning the actions of Boko Haram and working to strengthen Muslim-Christian ties.
