'I have not abandoned Yoruba Nation agitation,' Sunday Igboho insists

A prominent advocate for the Yoruba Nation, Sunday Adeyemo aka Sunday Igboho, has taken a significant step towards actualizing his vision.

Igboho recently submitted a petition to the United Kingdom government and Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s support for the establishment of the Yoruba Nation.

The activist’s spokesman, Olayomi Koiki, said on X platform on Sunday his principal submitted the petition on behalf of the leader of the Yoruba Nation movement, Prof. Adebanji Akintoye

He wrote; “At exactly 14:00 hrs Dr Chief Sunday Igboho delivered a petition to UK Prime Minister on behalf of Prof. Adebanji Akintoye, leader of the YORUBA NATION movement and Olayomi Koiki, his spokesman @10DowningStreet.”

This move is the latest in Igboho’s ongoing efforts to secure international backing for the Yoruba Nation.

It comes after his tumultuous experience in 2021, when he was arrested alongside his wife, Ropo, in Cotonou, Benin Republic, at the request of the Nigerian government.

Igboho fled Nigeria following a raid by the Department of State Services (DSS) on his Ibadan residence, resulting in two deaths and the arrest of 12 of his aides.

The DSS alleged that Igboho was stockpiling weapons and declared him wanted.

Despite attempts by the Federal Government to repatriate him, Igboho was eventually arraigned at the Court D’Apeal in Cotonou and detained in a prison.

He faced charges related to arms smuggling, inciting violence, and advocating for Yoruba secession.

After spending time in prison, Igboho was released in 2023. His petition to the UK government marked a new chapter in his quest for Yoruba Nationhood.

While the contents of the petition remain unknown, it is clear that Igboho seeks to leverage international influence to advance his cause.

The UK government’s response will be closely watched, as it may set a precedent for other nations’ involvement in Nigeria’s internal affairs.
