Supreme Court affirms Diri’s re-election as Bayelsa governor

The Supreme Court of Nigeria has reaffirmed the electoral victory of Bayelsa State Governor, Duoye Diri, of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

This decision marks a significant milestone in the state’s political history and puts an end to the legal battle surrounding the November 11, 2023, gubernatorial election.

The five-member panel of the Supreme Court, in a unanimous decision, dismissed the appeal filed by Timipre Sylva, the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), challenging the election outcome.

This ruling validates the initial declaration of Diri as the winner of the election by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The legal dispute began when Sylva and his party, APC, alleged irregularities and electoral malpractices in the conduct of the election. They sought redress through the courts, hoping to overturn Diri’s victory.

However, the Supreme Court’s decision has now put to rest any doubts about the legitimacy of Diri’s re-election.
