Taliban claims killing of Pakistani singer

A faction of the Pakistani Taliban militant group have claimed responsibility for the killing of beloved Pakistani singer Amjad Sabri who was gunned down yesterday following an attack in the port city of Karachi.

A funeral was staged for the 45-year-old with thousands of mourners trooping out to pay their last respect for the musician who is considered to be one of the most popular Asian singers of the Sufi devotional music that dates back more than 700 years.

The funeral saw devotees thronging the ambulance carrying Sabri’s body to the funeral, with many struggling to catch a glimpse of his body thereby halting the funeral process.

Sabri’s death was the latest in a high-profile series of attacks in Karachi, a megacity of 20 million plagued by political, ethnic and sectarian violence.
