Tension rises as Benin Republic rejects terrorism allegations, summons Nigerien diplomat

The Benin Republic has formally summoned a Nigerien diplomat to address accusations made by Niger’s junta leader, Abdourahamane Tchiani, alleging that Benin is supporting terrorist activities in West Africa.

Benin’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a strong protest against the claims, describing them as baseless and inflammatory.

In a statement released on Tuesday via its official X account, Foreign Minister Olushegun Bakari confirmed that Niger’s chargé d’affaires had been summoned to clarify the allegations.

“Due to the unfounded accusations made against our country, the chargé d’affaires of Niger has been summoned,” the ministry stated.

The ministry further emphasized its rejection of the claims through a formal letter of protest, reiterating Benin’s commitment to peace and cooperation with neighboring nations.

The diplomatic dispute follows a Christmas Day address by Tchiani, in which he accused Benin of acting as a rear base for terrorists aiming to destabilize Niger. These allegations come amid a broader regional crisis triggered by the military coup in Niger, which ousted President Mohamed Bazoum in July 2023.

Relations between Niger and Benin have been tense in recent years, fueled by disputes over oil exports, trade, and border closures. Despite these challenges, both nations had recently made efforts to rebuild ties, including the appointment of new ambassadors.

Benin’s foreign ministry reiterated its commitment to fostering peaceful relations, warning that baseless accusations could jeopardize regional stability.

“Benin remains committed to dialogue and to fraternal collaboration between the two nations,” the ministry stated.

The allegations have also implicated Nigeria, with Tchiani accusing the country of hosting a French military base intended to undermine Niger.

Responding to the claim, Nigeria’s National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, dismissed the accusations as baseless stating “Nigeria would never allow a foreign military base on its soil,” Ribadu asserted.

Despite the escalating tensions, the Federal Government of Nigeria has expressed its openness to dialogue with Niger’s junta to promote regional stability and understanding.
