To mark inauguration, Gov. Aiyedatiwa frees eight inmates, reduces sentences for 43 others
To mark his inauguration as the duly elected governor of Ondo State, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, on Monday, granted freedom to eight prison inmates and reduced the sentences for 43 prisoners serving various jail terms.
A statement issued by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Ebenezer Adeniyan, said Aiyedatiwa, acting on a prerogative of clemency on the recommendations of the State Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy, ordered the immediate release of eight convicts, while 15 death row inmates had their sentences commuted to prison terms, with another 20 serving life sentences having their jail terms reduced.
The decision was contained in a statement titled, “Inauguration: Gov Aiyedatiwa Extends Mercy to 43 Prisoners”.
“This decision is a testament to Governor Aiyedatiwa’s belief in second chances and the potential for rehabilitation.
“It is His Excellency’s responsibility to ensure that our justice system reflects mercy and humanity,” the statement concluded
